Straight from the heart Prof Raju Karnak shares his literary and academic career with readers.
“I started my writing career after retiring as History Professor. As a writer, I was always fascinated by the history of culture and civilization. This inner urge led me to pen down three of my books. “Glimpses of 20th Century” is a compilation of important events.”
The second book “Vamshavriksham” is a work that highlights the development of a family tree covering a period of more than 250 years (10 generations).
The third book “Ezhavarude Abhijhatha Vamshaparamparyam: Mayyanadinte Kalpadukal” deals with the evolution of the Ezhava family system in Mayyanad, spanning over centuries.
I was born in an ordinary family [Kandanavattom-family name] in scenic village called Mayyanad as the 4th child [eldest son] of R.Gopalan and K. Vasanthi. My school education began in Mayyanad Vellamanal School and Mayyanad High School.
I started my career as a college teacher in 1970 at Sree Narayana College, Shertalla. From there I came to Sree Narayana College, Kollam. Except for a brief period of 3 years, I served in Sree Narayana College, Kollam till my retirement on 31 March 2001. As a teacher, I was totally committed to the profession and I am of the view that I was not a bad teacher.
After my retirement, I devoted my time to reading and writing. In the meantime a passion for travel gripped me. Thus began my travels. I made extensive travel both domestic and international. Visited most of the Indian States, including many of the major Indian cities, and more than 25 countries. One thing that struck my mind, in my travels, that what I learned from books and taught my students with maps and other illustrations, was witnessing and experiencing directly. This thought itself was a great revelation and experience that would influence my writing.
Finally, let me have a word about my family. Consists of my wife and two sons. Wife Beenakumari, is also a retired professor. My eldest son is in Singapore with his family and my second son is presently in Saudi Arabia and his family is here.
