Mayyanad Ezhavas – Virtuous Forebearers Of A Noble Lineage

Mayyanad Ezhavas - Virtuous Forebearers Of A Noble Lineage

– Raju Karnak

History helps us to understand the great progress of the human race. Even though history deals with the past, it really helps us to explain the present and acts as a light to the future. Things that are happening today are the natural expressions of yesterday. Attitudes and beliefs that are not based on the past will not lead us to correct conclusions. One has to learn life looking backward, but he has to live looking forward. History is as important to man as memory is to him. It is through the study of history that he becomes a universal citizen. Traditional history writing in the past neglected local events and their implications. Local history gives expression to the life experiences of ordinary people. Only recently we realised the truth that local and family histories are as important as social and political history.

Mayyanad is a land inhabited by enlightened people with a tradition of their own. It is also one of the rarest lands in Kerala, which was least affected by the cruelties and oppressions of the caste system. Even though the majority of the people are Hindus, particularly Ezhavas, people of different castes and communities live together here harmoniously.
